Shattered peace of mind?

Why Glass Insurance should be a must for organisations leasing council premises.

The importance of Glass Insurance

Imagine this: Your community group has just settled into a vibrant council-owned property. The space feels just right, welcoming, functional, and full of potential. But then, one unfortunate day, a stray ball crashes through a window, or worse, vandalism strikes. Suddenly, that inviting space is marred by broken glass, unexpected repair bills, and disruption to your operations.

This is where Glass Insurance plays a critical role. It is, often overlooked but is essential for anyone leasing a third party owned building or council-owned premises. If you’re a not-for-profit community group, understanding why glass cover matters can save you from costly surprises and keep your focus where it belongs: on your mission and your people.

What’s usually covered?

It can extend to a variety of fixed glass items that are part of your leased property, including:

-Fixed glass panels and windows.
-Refrigeration cabinets with glass fronts.
-Glass in counters and shelving.
-Interior showcases.
-Fixed mirrors.
-Other fixed internal glass such as toilet pans and hand basins.

These items are integral to your premises’ function and appearance. Damage to any of them can disrupt your daily activities and lead to expensive repairs or replacements.

Did you know? Glass Insurance is often required

If you lease a council-owned property, you might be surprised to learn that many councils require tenants to hold Glass Insurance as part of their lease agreement. This requirement isn’t just bureaucratic red tape, it’s a practical safeguard. Councils want to ensure that any damage to glass fixtures is promptly and properly addressed without burdening the community or the council’s resources.

By having Glass Insurance, you may not only be complying with lease conditions but also protecting your organisation from the financial impact of breakage or vandalism.

What exactly is “Breakage” and “Glass”?

To clarify, here are some key definitions:

  • Breakage
    (a) For plate or sheet glass, vitreous china or ceramic material, a fracture extending through the entire thickness of the glass, vitreous china or ceramic material; and
    (b) For laminated glass, perspex or plastic a fracture extending through the entire thickness of the lamination, perspex or plastic.

  • External Glass
Fixed glass, perspex and plastic material used in external windows, doors, skylights and showcases.

  • Internal Glass
Fixed glass, perspex and plastic material in internal partitions, doors, windows, counters, shelves and stock restraints, showcases, mirrors (including hanging mirrors) and other internal fixed glass and vitreous china and ceramic items.

  • Vandalism
Intentional damage other than breakage to external and internal glass by third parties other than family or employees.

Understanding these terms helps you know exactly what your Insurance covers and why it’s so important.
